The Belham Curriculum:

Maths

At The Belham, pupils achieve mathematical fluency through Math Mastery. Lessons follow the Concrete / Pictorial / Abstract approach and four stages: Anchor Task, New Learning, Guided Practice, Independent Practice. Ongoing analysis ensures all children progress. Tools like Times Tables Rockstars and MyMaths also support learning.

Curriculum Intent

By the end of their time at The Belham, pupils will be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing a conceptual understanding as well as the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.  They will be able to reason mathematically by finding relationships and making generalisations. They will be able to justify and prove their reasoning using mathematical language. Pupils will be able to solve a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

Our Offer

Our Math Mastery approach, initiated in Reception, fosters a seamless progression of mathematical skills across year groups up to Year 6. Each lesson encompasses four distinct segments: Anchor Task, New Learning, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice. This comprehensive methodology is rooted in thorough research and evidence, enhancing mathematical fluency while circumventing rote learning. It introduces novel concepts via Bruner's Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach, encouraging pupils to think mathematically rather than mechanically recite formulas. Furthermore, our pedagogical strategy imparts mental techniques for problem-solving, exemplified by activities such as bar model drawing.

For additional information, please visit the Maths No Problem website. Our teaching model continually evaluates pupils' progress to identify areas necessitating supplementary instruction, ensuring that no student advances until fully prepared. To further develop fluency skills, we utilise Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots as educational tools.

How you can help at home

Parents can assist their children in maths at home by establishing a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, engaging in collaborative math activities, and identifying real-world applications to reinforce mathematical skills. Additionally, our Belham pupils have access to home learning apps, namely Numerbots for Key Stage 1 and Times Tables Rockstars for Key Stage 2.

What are the Fluency Facts By Term

Quick and accurate recall of key mathematical facts is vital for building children's confidence and resilience in maths. When these facts become automatic, children can focus more on solving complex problems. To support this, we’ve outlined six essential skills for each year group to practise and master. Your involvement at home is invaluable in strengthening these skills. Regular practice boosts fluency, confidence, and enjoyment of maths.

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home!

What is NumBots?

Pupils at The Belham have access to NumBots, an online platform designed to help children build confidence and fluency in maths. Through fun, interactive games, it supports key skills like counting, addition, and subtraction.

  • Reception: Focuses on number recognition and early addition and subtraction.
  • Year 1: Helps develop number bonds and fluency with numbers up to 20.
  • Year 2: Strengthens addition and subtraction fluency to prepare for more advanced maths.

While using NumBots at home isn’t mandatory, we encourage short, regular practice (about 5–10 minutes a few times a week) to support your child’s progress. Thank you for your involvement!

What is Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)?

Pupils also have access to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), a fun online platform designed to help children master their times tables and division facts through interactive games.

  • Year 2: Children have access to both NumBots and TTRS. While NumBots focuses on addition and subtraction fluency, TTRS introduces times tables to help build a solid foundation for future maths learning.
  • Year 3 and beyond: TTRS supports children in becoming confident and quick with all their times tables, preparing them for more complex mathematical concepts.

As with NumBots, practising TTRS at home is encouraged but not mandatory. Regular, short sessions (about 5–10 minutes a few times a week) can greatly support your child’s progress in maths. Thank you for your continued support!
