10 helpful tips to help your child thrive in this week's Maths and English challenges
Assessments, tests, exams – these are all words that describe the same kind of thing: a chance to show what you know! With challenges taking place across English and Maths across the school every term, they are an important tool for both teachers and students alike. Even grown-ups do tests, like getting a driver’s license! Since exams are a part of life, learning how to handle them confidently is a great skill.
At The Belham, assessments are used to see how your learning is going. Tests help us understand what’s working well in class and what could use some extra practice. They also give children a chance to learn more about what they know and what areas can be improved on. Think of a test as a challenge to show off their skills and maybe even discover something new about what they're learning.
Here are some top tips to help your child feel prepared and confident for any test that comes their way!
Top Tips for Exam Success
- Read the Questions Carefully
Start by reading each question slowly and carefully. Pay attention to any key words in the question – what is it really asking you? Does it want a full sentence or just a single word answer? In math, does it ask you to show your working? The more closely you read the question, the better your answer will be. - Notice the number of marks available
Not all questions are worth the same number of marks. If a question is worth more than one mark, it’s likely asking for a longer or more detailed answer. Take your time with these, as they’re meant to test your understanding a bit more deeply. - Show Your Working (for Maths)
When it comes to maths, show your working out! Even if your final answer isn’t quite right, you might still get marks for showing how you got there. Plus, it’s a great way to double-check your own thinking. - Make Sure Your Answers Are Clear
Check that your answers are neat and easy to read. This can mean making sure your numbers and letters look clear and putting your answers in the right spots. Take a moment to make sure your "0" doesn’t look like a "6," and that your "4" is different from a "9." Little things like this make a big difference! - Don’t Rush to Finish First
Remember, finishing early isn’t the goal – it’s about doing your best. Taking your time gives you a better chance of answering each question correctly. Focus on being accurate and thoughtful with your answers, not on finishing the fastest. - Pace Yourself and Track Your Progress
Look at how many questions are on the test, and pace yourself. If you’re not sure how to divide up your time, ask your teacher for help. At the halfway point, check that you’re at least halfway through the test so you don’t run out of time. - Skip and Return to Tricky Questions
If you find yourself stuck on a question, don’t worry! Move on to the next one and come back to it later. Sometimes, you’ll have a 'brainwave' and the answer will come to you once you’re not stressing over it. - Always Check Your Answers
Plan to finish at least five minutes early so you have time to review your answers. Checking gives you a chance to spot any missed questions, see if there’s something you can improve, and fix small mistakes. - Take a Breather When You Need It
If you feel nervous or stuck, take a short break. Put down your pencil, stretch your fingers, roll your shoulders, and take a few deep breaths. A little extra oxygen can help your brain stay sharp and focused. - Believe in Yourself
Finally, trust what you already know! Think positively, and remind yourself of all the hard work you’ve put into learning. Confidence is a big part of doing well on a test, so believe in your abilities and give it your best shot.
Remember, tests don’t have to be scary – they’re just a way to show what you know and discover what you can work on next. By taking your time, reading carefully, and checking over your answers, you’re setting yourself up for success. Good luck, and remember, you’ve got this!
