Earlier this term Y5 was treated by the Friends of Belham to watch Pig Heart Boy at The Unicorn Theatre. The play is centered around a boy named Cameron who has a heart disease which doesn’t allow him to do everything his friends can in life. His dad meets a surgeon called Dr. Bryce who has been breeding pigs and feeding them human DNA. In an unusual twist the doctor says that Cameron can have a heart transplant from the pig.

Cameron wants to meet his heart bearer and realises that the really sassy pig he is getting his heart from (Trudy) can actually talk. Despite feeling nervous, Cameron has the operation in the hope his new heart allows him to do everything he wants to do. He tells his best friend, Marlon, about it and makes him swear that he will never tell a soul. Marlon ends up telling the newspapers about it and Cameron is bombarded with cameras!

Cameron feels like he can never trust his best friend again. Soon after this, Cameron figures out he is going to have a new sibling as his mum is pregnant. Using his nan’s old camera, he tries to ensure that he connects with the new baby by making videos for him to watch if the operation doesn’t go to plan.

Having always had to sit out when his friends compete against one another holding their breath underwater, Cameron puts his new heart to the test. After nearly dying in the swimming pool, Doctor Bryce lets Cameron know that his body is rejecting the new heart and he will require a second transplant.

At first giving the audience a scare with a final heartwarming message to his baby brother, it’s revealed that Cameron decides to go ahead with the transplant. Like every great play, the audience is rewarded with a happy ending as Marlon and Cameron make up.

Overall, we absolutely loved our day out. I thought that the play had great dialogue, strong acting and amazing props. I especially enjoyed all of the plot twists and surprises!
