Being a leader in a sports team is an exciting and important role. A good leader helps their team do their best whilst making sure that everyone has fun! After captaining the Belham netball team to 3rd place in their recent tournament, we spoke to Aurelien in Y6 about what makes a strong leader. Here’s what he had to say:

1. Be Encouraging
A great leader always cheers on their teammates. Say things like, "Great job!" or "Keep going, you can do it!" Encouragement makes everyone feel good and helps them play better.

2. Demonstrate Good Sportsmanship
Win or lose, always be kind and fair. Shake hands with the other team, say "well done," and never brag or get angry. Being a good sport shows that you respect the game and everyone playing it.

3. Lead by Example
Your teammates will look up to you, so show them how to play fairly, work hard, and stay focused. If you give your best effort, they will too!

4. Stay Positive
Sometimes games are tough, but a great leader never gives up. Keep smiling and stay positive, even when things don’t go your way.

5. Be Respectful
Always listen to your coach, teammates, and referees. Treat everyone with kindness and follow the rules. Respect is key to being a strong leader.

6. Always Be a Team Player
As they say, there is no I in team! A great leader makes sure everyone is included and gets a chance to shine. Work together, pass the ball, and support one another.

7. Communicate Clearly
Talk to your teammates in a friendly and helpful way. Call for the ball, give instructions, and listen to others. Good communication helps the team work smoothly together.

By following these tips, you can be a fantastic team leader and help your team play their best while having fun. Remember, a true Belhamite brings people together and makes sports enjoyable for everyone!
